We periodically receive certification inquiries from clients asking if Unistrut channel, fittings, and hardware comply with various federal and European statutes, including The Buy America Act, Buy America 49 USC, LEED, REACH, and RoHS.
The Buy American Act of 1933 and Buy America 49 U.S.C. are statutes designed to ensure federal and state transportation and military and government installation projects are built with domestically produced materials, and that U.S. infrastructure investments benefit American companies. If you need certificates documenting the domestic origins of your materials, request them when submitting your purchase order. Please note–we can’t supply written documentation verifying the domestic origin of strut not purchased from Unistrut Service Company, but when orders are placed through us, we can provide documentation upon request.
LEED, REACH, and ROHS certifications are often required to ensure that products meet environmental standards. LEED (also known as “Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) is a green-building certification program that rewards environmentally friendly building strategies and with “points” that earn tax credits. A copy of the Unistrut LEED Compliance Statement is available here, or you can read more by viewing our previous blog post on LEED.
Clients exporting Unistrut products to the European Union nations (or who sell to customers who export) sometimes inquire about a Certificate of Compliance to REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals). Provisions of REACH require article manufacturers to inform recipients about the presence of any Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) that is listed on the ECHA Candidate List. For example, some of our products contain traces of hexavalent chromium, a material on the SVHC list.
Substances on this list may be used without consequence if the total amount does not exceed 0.1% by weight for the entire finished product. Remember, in most cases, Unistrut is a component of a finished good, so in many cases, REACH compliance is not an issue. Items containing a substance on the SVHC list above a concentration of 0.1% by weight require additional reporting obligations before the material may be imported to the EU. When clients inquire about REACH compliance, our corporate offices analyze each product to determine if it is on the SVHC list and above the threshold limit. Because the SVHC list currently contains 151 substances, verifying REACH compliance is a time-consuming task, but this service is available upon request.
We also periodically field questions about RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) compliance. RoHS is an EU directive that places restrictions on the use of six hazardous materials found in electrical and electronic products, including Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Mercury (Hg), Hexavalent chromium (Hex-Cr), Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE). A copy of the Unistrut RoHS compliance report is available in downloadable PDF format here.
At Unistrut Service Company, we are committed to helping our clients with concerns about our materials’ regulatory compliance. If you have additional questions on Unistrut’s compliance with The Buy America Act, Buy America, LEED, REACH, or RoHS, contact Unistrut Service Company for further assistance.
